The Myth of Progress: Why It Never Gets Easier

We all have dreams and aspirations. We want to be better, smarter, richer, happier. We want to achieve something great and leave our mark on the world. But, as we pursue our goals, we often face a harsh reality: it never gets easier.

No matter how hard we work, how much we learn, how much we improve, there is always someone else who is better than us. There is always a higher level of competition, a tougher challenge, a bigger obstacle. There is always more to do, more to know, more to achieve.

This is the myth of progress: the idea that we can reach a point where we are satisfied with our accomplishments and can rest on our laurels. The idea that we can stop striving and start enjoying. The idea that we can finally be happy.

But, this is not how the world works. The world is not a static place, but a dynamic one. The world is constantly changing, evolving, and growing. And so are we. We are not meant to settle, but to explore. We are not meant to stagnate, but to grow. We are not meant to be content, but to be curious.

The problem is not that we have goals, but that we have the wrong goals. We have goals that are based on external factors, such as status, money, fame, or recognition. We have goals that are based on social comparisons, such as being better than others, being the best, or being the first. We have goals that are based on ego, such as proving ourselves, impressing others, or validating our worth.

These goals are not only unrealistic, but also unfulfilling. They are not aligned with our true values, passions, or purposes. They are not driven by our intrinsic motivation, but by our extrinsic motivation. They are not based on what we love, but on what we fear.

The solution is not to give up on our goals, but to change our goals. We need to have goals that are based on internal factors, such as learning, growth, mastery, or contribution. We need to have goals that are based on personal standards, such as being better than we were yesterday, being the best we can be, or being the first to do something new. We need to have goals that are based on self, such as expressing ourselves, fulfilling our potential, or creating our legacy.

These goals are not only realistic, but also rewarding. They are aligned with our true values, passions, and purposes. They are driven by our intrinsic motivation, not by our extrinsic motivation. They are based on what we love, not on what we fear.

The truth is that it never gets easier, but it can get better. It can get better if we stop chasing after the wrong things and start pursuing the right things. It can get better if we stop comparing ourselves to others and start competing with ourselves. It can get better if we stop seeking external validation and start finding internal satisfaction.

It never gets easier, but it can get more meaningful. It can get more meaningful if we realize that the journey is more important than the destination. It can get more meaningful if we appreciate the process more than the outcome. It can get more meaningful if we enjoy the challenge more than the reward.

It never gets easier, but it can get more fun. It can get more fun if we embrace the uncertainty, the risk, and the failure. It can get more fun if we experiment, innovate, and create. It can get more fun if we play, laugh, and celebrate.

It never gets easier, but it can get more fulfilling. It can get more fulfilling if we make a difference, not just a living. It can get more fulfilling if we serve a cause, not just ourselves. It can get more fulfilling if we leave a legacy, not just a footprint.

It never gets easier, but it can get more worthwhile. It can get more worthwhile if we live with purpose, not just with passion. It can get more worthwhile if we live with gratitude, not just with ambition. It can get more worthwhile if we live with joy, not just with happiness.

It never gets easier, but it can get more awesome. And that’s what life is all about.
